  1. Is the Prince coverage over-the-top or is it just me? It’s continuing this morning. Not being a fan, I never knew he was so popular. It’s as if there is no other news in the world.

    • I thought it was a bit overdone yesterday, even as I was reading complaints that Fox News was ignoring Prince because he’s black. Yeah, on twitter people just lie.

      • I had to turn it off after Shep…….Was never a fan….but there was no “news” there……..I was surprised how many people work for Fox News that knew him…..but its not like anything new was happening.

I will say this…..for someone whose name I hadn’t seen or heard of in years…….he seems very popular today.

On that twitter lairs…I saw that very funny.

    • Prince was at his peak in popularity when today’s newsies were growing up. They put his coverage at the top by trying to relive their youth.

    • Never having bought a Prince album (own 3 Michael Jackson) I was only moderately interested in two aspects:
      1) why people thought he was a big deal
      2) the mystery of the demise.

Plenty of (1) though it still didn’t strike much of a chord with me. Only TMZ zeroed in on (2).

      • I didn’t know that she was making doity movies until they mentioned it on the local news. I guess that they thought that it was important.

    • yes. prince was a weird character, but like the great Robert Cray, he is a musicians artist. every time you listen to Robert, you are taking a lesson, same with Prince. his personal life, religion etc apart he was a complete musician. he wrote, scored, arranged, did most of the vocals, an excellent guitar player, excellent players wanted to play with him, he also did all the technical production, sound, video etc. he has more discs out than the Beatles, maybe more than Robert plus vaults of recordings unpublished. James Brown thought he was cool, that compliment is not to be taken lightly. some of his stuff is strange, and i could care less about his pop tunes but if you do a fair you tube sample of him live you will understand why he gets the props he is getting. he earned them.

This is partly a philosophical argument. What constitutes news? Is news only news worthy of TV when it generates decent ratings? Or is news also an obligation where you don’t just tell the stories that rate but also the stories that don’t.

I look at it this way. The Nightly Broadcast news shows outrate most cable news programs night after night. They cover stories cable news does not. So it’s not quite so straightforward to argue that CNN is putting on stories that will generate eyeballs when the nightlies put on stories CNN isn’t covering which generate even bigger eyeballs.

Cable News has become more risk averse than the Nightly Newscasts. That’s pathetic.

Top three topics in 2015 on nightly newscasts:
    1) Winter weather
    2) Donald Trump
    3) terrorism

  3. Looks like not a single member of #BLACKLIVESMATTER in North America is siding with Kelly Ripa.

    • I liked her hair better the old way. But, if she is happy with it and her husband is happy with it, it’s none of my business.

          • Actually, the world would be much better off if people minded their own business. However, the perpetually offended Left would never let that happen. They are the modern version of Alice Kravitz, and we are all poor Abners who have to suffer through it.

    • Yea…I saw that on Walters show in a interview with Bill…..or maybe it was Bills show with Walters…….but they did talk about that…..it was funny.
