This powerful reading of Brahms's second concerto, a collaboration between Viennese pianist Alexander Jenner and the singularly underrated American conductor Dean Dixon, will be familiar to many who visit this site. For years this imposing performance was one of our most popular Paperback releases—first as a bare bones CD, and more recently as a free download. That transfer, however, was sourced from a dim mono reel tape of limited fidelity. Now for the first time Jenner and Dixon can be heard in full stereo, and the nobility and drama of the music comes across as never before. An added bonus is a sinewy rendition of the Tragic Overture, played with same intensity that marked Frandsen's reading of the composer's Symphony 4 (available in our Musical Mysteries series).

The concerto is sourced from a near-mint stereophonic pressing, meticulously restored in sonics superior to the original. In addition, vagaries of balance and pitch have been corrected. The Overture, from a stereo 7.5 ips reel tape release, sounds even better. RD 180 is also available via download: unencrypted 320kbps mp3 files, properly labeled and tagged. High-resolution jpgs of the cover and insert are included. Please see our download tips before purchasing.
